When the Past Comes to Light… The Cancellation of Jon Gruden.

The New York Times reported this weekend that emails from Las Vegas Raiders Head Coach Jon Gruden were being investigated. Jon Gruden is the ferocious, razor-sharp-tongued coach who says what he thinks with little to no filter. Because of this characteristic, he is adored by many. When the story initially broke, numerous people agreed with starting quarterback Derek Carr, ““Us as a team, we’re like, ‘Yeah, Coach, it was 10 years ago. We love you, man. We got your back,'”. Derek Carr is right in that these emails occurred over the course of 10 years. But does time truly heal all wounds? Even if those wounds or words are racist, misogynistic, and homophobic? Is this a 'guys will be guys' situation? Was this simply “locker room talk”? No, no, no, and no. In fact, the first active NFL player to share that he is gay, Carl Nassib plays or better worded “played” for Gruden.

Yes, it's unfortunate that these remarks were made ten years ago, but as a leader in one of the world's most diverse sports leagues with the ability to significantly impact the life of another human being, this is purely unacceptable.

The more light that is shed on this situation, the more depressing it becomes. If the contents of Jon Gruden's emails are accurate, he certainly has a mountain to climb to even consider being forgiven. Read more about what led to the resignation of John Gruden HERE.

Key takeaways:

  1.         First and foremost, being homophobic, misogynistic, or racist is never cool or acceptable. Is it reasonable to have questions and seek clarification? Yes, but it is not acceptable to deny or defame someone for who they are and how they identify.

  2.         With the advancement of technology, the old adage "what is done in the dark will eventually come to light" has become even more accurate.

  3.         Misogynist: A person whose views are shaped by ingrained and institutionalized prejudice against women; a sexist (dictionary.com).

  4.         Should Jon Gruden be canceled? Let’s propose that he be educated and informed.

Talking points:

·         Should Jon Gruden be held accountable for emails sent 10 years ago?

·         Should Jon Gruden be canceled?

·         What does Jon Gruden need to do to rectify this situation?
