September is National Suicide Prevention Month
The latest data from the National College Health Assessment shows that 32% of LSU students have had suicidal thoughts at least once within the past year. This is in comparison to the national average of 35%. This data speaks to the challenges faced by college aged students in recognizing the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders that impact our overall mental health. It is also a call to action for all of us to erase the stigma and learn easy and effective ways to talk to people who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide.
Michael Eberhard, LSU Director of Wellness and Health Promotions, is organizing a series of workshops for the LSU community that’s available to students, faculty, and staff to help train anyone on ways to recognize when someone is struggling with their mental health. Just like CPR, QPR is a lifesaving intervention designed to help participants recognize signs for someone at risk for suicide, gain skills to intervene, and be informed about how best to refer someone to care. Sessions will be led by licensed counselors from the LSU Student Health Center.
