Mental Health Support in the World of NIL

Gymnastics Retreat 2024

Working on your mental health can look many different ways depending on the particular needs of the student-athlete. Some might benefit from one-on-one clinical counseling while others enjoying the experience of what’s gained through mental health work focusing specifically on sport performance and team dynamics. Both are growing in acceptance and have become an integral part of elite athletics.

In the new landscape of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), some may feel like student-athletes receiving this additional financial compensation is a huge benefit that would take pressure off of them and their families. However, experience tells is that it can actually add to the growing list of stressors and expectations that can weigh on their mental health.

Dr. LaKeitha Poole, Director of LSU Athletics Sport Psychology & Counseling, recently spoke with ABC Baton Rouge affiliate WBRZ about how her team of licensed mental health providers support the growing mental health needs of our student-athletes. To view this story, click HERE.
